Police force recruits four-legged help in the fight against drug crime

Otto, a Belgian Shepherd, joins Negro, a black Labrador, in the fight against drug trafficking and consumption in and around Almuñécar

Almuñécar police force have recently recruited a new member to their unit. Otto is a Belgian Shepherd, or Malinois, who will work with agents in the fight against crime in the Almuñécar area.

Otto made his debut at the beginning of April and was formally introduced to the towns residents by the councillor for citizen safety, Juan José Ruiz Joya, and Almuñécars police chief, Manuel Ledesma, along with coordinator of the dog unit, Jesús Garrido.

Otto joins Negro, a black Labrador, in the fight against drug trafficking and consumption in and around Almuñécar.

This new dog has just increased the dog unit in Almuñécar. Its a further service that we will offer to our citizens, whose main objective is fight against any type of drugs in areas near to schools, bus stations and promenades and police controls in this fight, said councillor Juan José Ruiz Joya.

According to Ruiz Joya, Otto has been trained to identify substances including hashish, cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
