La Cala de Mijas residents' association has succeeded in stopping Mijas council from sellling off a big piece of land for private housing. The 28,180-square-metre plot, by the Los Olivos football pitch on the outskirts of the village, is due to be sold for development for around seven million euros in order to help council funds. Residents have complained that the sale deprives the area of an important piece of public land and risks causing over development in La Cala. The council still wants to sell land but has now asked for new ideas from locals.
