From social media to the streets, calls for equality for women were louder and more numerous than ever on Wednesday to mark International Women's Day.

Messages, banners and hashtags called for real equality in society, bringing up issues such as work and motherhood, the salary gap and domestic violence.

The march in the city of Malaga attracted around 2,000 people - mainly women, but also men and children - who walked for two hours through the city's streets.

This followed other events throughout the day, which included the first international strike when women downed tools, for periods ranging from five minutes to the full day, in 45 countries.

In Malaga Inma Espinosa and María Victoria Alarcón got together with some of the other 44 women who became the city's first female Local Police officers 35 years ago.

The Costa Women organisation extends its Women's Day activities until today, Friday, with its fifth annual conference. Make It Happen is the theme for the event held at Andalucía Lab in Marbella from 9.30am, in collaboration with 1230 The Women's Company.

This follows Thursday's Be Bold For Change networking party at Avanto restaurant, also organised by Costa Women.
