Roman burials can be found beneath nearby beach

  • Three Roman graves beneath sand dunes only 500 metres from the basilica were discovered in 1991.

The zone adjacent to the paleochristian Basilica has never been subject to archaeological examination but there is no doubt that it is home to Roman burials, after excavation work in 1991 uncovered three Roman graves beneath sand dunes which lie only 500 metres from the basilica.

This means there is a possibility that the entire area between the basilica and the beach could effectively be a Roman graveyard. However, despite repeated petitions over the years from the historical heritage protection association, Cilniana, no further excavations have been carried out.
