In 2009, a year after Jesús Catalá became bishop of Malaga, he announced his intention to create a plan to finish the construction of the cathedral. However, days later he reneged, saying that it wasn't a priority.
By 2011, though, a plan officially was announced, but when cracks appeared in the roof's 'second skin', this was scrapped.
The citizens' movement Málaga por su Catedral was formed in 2014 and brought the cathedral's state back into the public arena but it wasn't until the bad weather at the start of December 2016 that the diocese formally revived the project.
