Alhaurín el Grande was plunged into another political crisis this week as opposition councillors joined forces to oust the present mayor, Antonia Ledesma, who reprents the local 'Por Alhaurín' party.

After months of rumour, a motion of no confidence was finally lodged at the town hall with the signatures of all the councillors of the PSOE, Izquierda Unida (IU) and Alternativa Socialista (ASALH).

Significantly it also included the signature of the PP's only councillor, Mari Francis Fernández, which will give the opposition a total of eleven votes against the ten votes of 'Por Alhaurín' in the no confidence debate set for 25 January.

The opposition plans to install IU councillor, Teresa Sánchez, as mayor.

There has been outrage both among the provincial PP leadership and local party membership over Fernández's decision to vote down the mayor, as the PP has an agreement to lend the vote of its councillor to keep the minority 'Por Alhaurín' group in power.

The forthcoming no-confidence vote is the latest twist in a long-running political saga in a town council that has seen three no-confidence votes in the last 30 years.

Opposition councillors are angry that the current mayor is, in their opinion, still carrying out the policies of the disgraced former mayor, Martín Serón, who was banned from office for a year for corruption in 2013 when still a member of the PP. Serón went on to set up the 'Por Alhaurín' party after the PP expelled him. All but one of the PP councillors at the time swapped to 'Por Alhaurín' in protest at Serón's treatment.
