It wasn't planned but the letter arrived "a second" before starting the show and he wanted to read it out. It was from 83-year-old Mercedes, a theatre fan and one of 350 pensioners invited by Antonio Banderas to his Soho CaixaBank theatre in Malaga for a concert as a way of paying tribute to their personal sacrifices during the pandemic.
In her letter, Mercedes said it would make her "really proud" to speak to him as there was something they had in common. "You live in the sixth floor flat at 2 Calle Zegrí, where I lived for over 30 years," she had written.
"Well, we're going to make that wish come true and speak to her," said Banderas while walking towards Mercedes' seat in the auditorium. "You must come for coffee with me one day. We have changed it round a bit, knocked a few walls down," the Malaga-born Hollywood actor smiled. And Mercedes grinned from cheek to cheek.
This was just one of the highlights of an emotional event at the Soho CaixaBank, Banderas' cultural project in Malaga city.
Combatting loneliness
Around 350 senior citizens from the province made the venue their first port of call since the start of the pandemic and having had all their vaccinations.
The event was organised by the Fundación Harena charity, which combats loneliness among the elderly.
"The volunteers have been telling us that some have swapped talking about pain and sadness for days now to talk about what they were going to wear today," said Angie Moreno, the foundation's director.
One guest, Conchi Tendón, of Algarrobo, said, "I shut myself in in March and I didn't come out until the vaccination."
Banderas introduced a concert of music from the movies with the newly formed Sinfónica Pop del Soho resident orchestra.
