The Phoenix Singers, the Costa del Sol's most recently formed choir, is currently holding auditions for a series of live shows to raise funds for local charitable organisations. The choir is based in the Coín area and was formed last year by jazz enthusiast Kevin Turner.

Born in Windsor, Kevin studied music at college and then opened his own music school offering private tuition. He moved to the Costa del Sol in 2008, and was soon looking for a musical project to keep himself occupied.

The 57-year-old musical director and his choreographer wife Suzanne became members of TAPAS (The Andalucía Performing Arts Society). After four years with TAPAS, Kevin left the group to form a new choir because he had visions of creating something completely different: he believes he has achieved this with The Phoenix Singers.

Kevin adapts and arranges all of the music to produce innovative four-part harmonies. Kevin expresses his professionalism and passion for music through his choir, using classical phrasing within modern musical arrangements. Under his direction and guidance, the choir learns, practices and performs songs that encompass many different genres and languages.

"The choir is mainly British, but we sing in a multitude of languages. For example, we sing in English, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch and even Latin. I am a task master, but the choir are very talented and they are quick learners. I try to make it easy for them, but they are a great bunch of people and they are very hard working," Kevin explains to Sur in English.

Anyone can join the group. Kevin welcomes all people that have a love of singing, regardless of previous experience, race, age, religion or gender.

"You do not have to have had experience. I believe everyone can sing. Everything is done with harmonies, so I offer lessons twice a week. I am a huge jazz fanatic and so I arrange many of the songs in a big band, jazzy style. Although we take it seriously, we all have great fun," he says.

The choir have been busy rehearsing its Christmas show, although Kevin is waiting for confirmation that this will go ahead. The new show is scheduled to take place in Mijas the second week in December and will be used to raise funds for the groups chosen charity.

"We are a non-profit group and everything we do is to raise money for local charities. We are affiliated with ARCH, but we also select a chosen charity. Along with my music, my passion is helping animals, Kevin says.

The choir meet every Tuesday at El Chuletón Restaurant in Alhaurín El Grande. For more information, contact: phoenix.kst@hotmail.com
