Malaga actor Antonio Banderas has gained his first Oscar nomination for his role in Pedro Almodóvar's Pain and Glory, a film that will also be competing for the Best Foreign Language picture.
Banderas, whose character is based on Almodóvar's own biography, faces stiff competition from Joaquin Phoenix, who beat Banderas to the Golden Globe last week, for his role in Joker.
The other Academy Award nominees in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category are Leonardo Di Caprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).
The nominees were announced on Monday. Banderas and Almodóvar will both be at the ceremony in Los Angeles on 9 February.
