San Sebastián. More than 200 speakers of 55 different nationalities, 170 exhibitors, around 500 journalists, 1,600 delegates and 13,500 visitors came together this week for the 21st edition of the prestigious three-day Gastronomika food fair in San Sebastián.

The Kursaal conference centre brought together the great and the good of the gastronomy world with a programme of activities which, as well as 70 demonstrations by chefs of global esteem, included workshops, tastings and the adjudication of competitions.

The fair, which ran from Monday until Wednesday, celebrated the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe by Juan Sebastián Elcano. It did so by bringing together some of the best cooks from the countries which Elcano visited on his journey such as Bel Coelho (Brazil), Carolina Bazán (Chile), Sau del Rosario (Philippines) and Kevin Cherkas (Indonesia).

Malaga chef Dani García also participated in the conference - one of his final acts in haute cuisine. The 43-year-old will in November close his Michelin-starred restaurant in Marbella before focusing on projects that can reach a wider audience.
