With the long languid days of summer behind us, the time has come to look forward to the renewed activity of autumn. Dare I say it, it is even time to put our minds back into gear! And there is no better way to achieve this than by joining one of the four friendly Arts Societies strung along the coast from Nerja to San Roque.
The life of the Societies centres round their monthly talks with experts from the UK speaking on a wide range of entertaining subjects. Initially the focus was on fine art but nowadays the menu embraces music, dance, film, theatre and travel - and even the art of cooking. All the talks are superbly illustrated with digital equipment.
The season will begin in Benahavís Town Hall on the evening of Tuesday 24 September with a talk on Gender and the Body - The Story of the Nude. Leslie Primo, a favourite visitor to the Costa, will explore our ongoing fascination with the human body from the Renaissance to the Impressionists.
On a different note the Nerja and Costa del Sol Societies start in mid-October with a talk on Vivaldi in Venice, a lecture with a difference since Peter Medhurst's delivery will include musical extracts.
Still in October the De la Frontera talk in San Roque will focus on Scotland's famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Illustrating the breadth of the topics their December lecture deals with Big Ben.
One of the marked characteristics of the societies is their social visitor-friendly atmosphere.
This is fostered by a series of social events such as quizzes, lunches or trips. Before Christmas, for instance, Benahavís, the Costa del Sol and Nerja are all visiting Cadiz and surroundings. The Benahavís trip will include a day in Jerez with preferential seats to enjoy a dancing display at the Andalusian School of Riding while the other two societies will focus on the life and times of the Phoenicians.
So as autumn advances there is no need to fret. A whole new world of culture and friendship awaits you.
