More than 500 art lovers attended the seventh annual event, supported by Benahavís town hall and wealth management advisors Blevins Franks, at the Gran Hotel in Benahavís.

During the five-hour event there were also performances by the local Spanish band Devils in the Sky and a ballet display by the Marbella Performance College.

Jane Norrie, one of the judges of the young artist competition, told SUR in English: "It was fantastic because all day there were throngs of people and there was such a happy atmosphere. It certainly put Benahavís on the map for the day.

"One thing we are particularly proud of is that this is a British organised event but includes many Spanish people too."

The free exhibition also featured a young artists' competition, a start-a-novel competition and a children's workshop.

Jane, who is originally from Edinburgh, and has lived in Spain for 20 years, added: "The 30 artist stands were the core of the event, but another highlight was the young artist competition. We had 24 artists from three local schools taking part.

"The Devils in the Sky were great too; they did two sessions so the whole of Benahavís must have heard them."

The winners of the young artist competition were: Alexsander Khrol, 11, from Swans International School, who took first place and won 150 euros; Sean Cronin, 13, from Laude International College, who finished in second place, winning 100 euros; and Poppy Frost, from the British International School of Marbella, who came third and claimed 50 euros.

Local writers were also represented at the Writers Wall, with visitors taking part in the Start-a-Novel Competition.

Former SUR in English editor Liz Parry and Arts Society Europe representative Jo Ward judged the competition and awarded a bottle of wine to the winner, Gillespie Robertson.

The Arts Society Benahavís was established in 2012 and is one of more than 385 local societies worldwide that are members of The Arts Society. The group hopes to further the enjoyment, knowledge and awareness of the arts and to stimulate interest in the cultural heritage of Spain.
