The Irish international soloist and chamber pianist Billy O'Brien was on the Costa del Sol last week to give two recitals, at the Kempinski Hotel in Estepona and Las Brisas Golf Club in Marbella, organised by Project Music.
O'Brien performed Four Mazurkas Op 17 by Chopin, which he followed with two of Ravel's Miroirs movements, Une Barque sur l'Océan and Alborada del Gracioso, and concluded with Polonaise Op 53 by Chopin.
"Both the Mazurkas and Miroirs are technically fiendishly difficult to perform but the soloist's mastery of the task was adequately demonstrated," said critic Morris Bishop after the Marbella concert.
The Polonaise received an ovation of several minutes in contrast to the "more subdued" applause for the rest of the programme, commented Bishop.
"Musically, the parallel to 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' might be 'melodiousness is in the ear of the listener' and artists should always be cognizant of this," he concluded.
