Solo artists or bands, with or without instruments. Variety was the order of the day, but they all had one thing in common: a dream, a high dose of excitement and plenty of patience.

Almost two thousand mostly youngsters descended on Malaga's Palacio de Congresos on Monday, ready to perform a 30-second snippet for the first round of auditions for the popular TV talent show Operación Triunfo's latest edition.

The auditions, which started on 30 May in Barcelona, are working their way around the country until a final stop in Madrid on 10 July.

Head of casting for the programme and singing coach, Noemí Galera, said that the previous edition of the show had "set the bar very high". Despite this, she said, "we are seeing a lot of very talented people here".

A lucky few were called back for a second audition on Tuesday, this time behind closed doors.
