Malaga-born Victoria de la Cruz García has died aged 110 after a heart attack. Spain's longest living nun had resided in Japan for 80 years, but she never let go of her Andalusian roots: according to family members, De la Cruz would yearn for the Mediterranean and often chat in Spanish, despite not having returned home since 1981.

She arrived in Japan for the first time in 1936 and was witness to important historical events such as the Second World War and the Hiroshima nuclear bomb. Victoria de la Cruz's work as a nun focused upon helping women and setting up schools.
