La Cala de Mijas Lions
Donation to Africa
La Cala Lions recently presented a cheque for 1,000 euros to Pam Young, who devotes most of her time trying to help an African community in Diema, Mali. It is a poor area, and clean drinking water and schools are high on the list of needed improvements.
The Lions Charity Shop welcomes donations of good quality clothes and bric-a-brac from 10am to 2pm Monday to Saturday. Volunteers are also needed. The club meets second and fourth Wednesday each month at Restaurant Olé, La Cala de Mijas 6pm.
A fundraising concert hosted by the Club Charity and Pleasure has raised more than 1,000 euros for Cudeca and Cáritas. The concert, held in the El Paraíso Golf Club in Estepona, was performed by the CAP Singers, a vocal group made up of 15 volunteers from the association. The singers performed a selection of songs from the past one hundred years, one from each decade, in celebration of the end of World War 1. The programme was organised by the CAP Singers' musical director, Yvonne Harrison, who performed two solos during the concert.
ARCH photo shoot
Sheila Walkett, one of the main organisers of ARCH, Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses, recently welcomed a group of photographers from Shutterbugs to take photos at the shelter. Photographs on display showed the animals when they had been taken to the rescue centre, in stark contrast to the healthy animals grazing in the meadows. Further information on future shoots, meetings and competition photographs can be found on their website www.shutterbugs-spain.org.

RBL Quiz trophy stays in Coín
Two teams from the Coín branch of the Royal British Legion met last week at the Ginger Pig Country Pub in Coín to try and retain the coveted Michael Taylor Trophy they won in Loja last year. Against strong opposition from Loja, Mollina, Los Romanes, Torremolinos and Mijas Costa, Coín team A (captain Perry Spencer, Russel Riggs, Frances Knowles, Tom Sawyer, Harry and Kerry Newell) won with just one point clear of Loja. In another close contest, Coín team B (Peter and Rosey Brown, Heather Riggs, Ian Matthews, Jan Smith and Jo Taylor) beat Los Romanes C. The raffle raised 217 euros for the 2018 Poppy Appeal.
