El Paraiso Golf

Fundraiser for Pieta House

A charity dinner in aid of Pieta House was held in the El Paraiso Golf club recently. It was organised by David and Barbara James and chef Paul and consisted of a seven-course meal with wine tasting sponsored by Richard Bell Young of Vinopolis wines Puerto Banús.

The event was to raise funds for the suicide and self harm prevention charity and to launch the Pieta House annual walk which takes place in Estepona on 12 May, 5.30am. Register at www.darknessintolight.ie

U3A

Looking for leaders

The U3A group are looking for people interested in running a course or managing a group. They will be given some basic guidance and the courses or activities can run between October and late May.

Volunteers will need to have a few hours a week free, fortnightly or monthly, depending on the course or activity. Occasionally group leaders need to take a short break for personal reasons and a backup leader is needed.

The courses and activities are very varied and suggestions are welcomed for additional courses or activities.

Planning for courses starting in October 2018 is already under way but more group leaders are needed.

Club Charity and Pleasure

CAP singers entertain

Club Charity and Pleasure (CAP) last week marked its 25th birthday with cake and wine for members. CAP Singers, under the direction of Yvonne Harrison, entertained with a selection from their new repertoire.

CAP is a social organisation which meets at 10.30am each Wednesday morning at Restaurante Chilli, Benamara. Some weeks they have a speaker. They also arrange events and excursions including regular trips to Gibraltar, the theatre, exhibitions, lunches and dinners at different venues along the Coast. They also raise money for local charities, mainly those supporting Alzheimer's sufferers, Adana, Aprona, Aspandem and Cudeca.

La Cala de Mijas Lions Club

Show bar Legends evening

The President of the Lions, Julie Barry, thanked Andrea and Paul of the show bar Legends for their support at a recent fundraising evening from which the money raised will go to local causes.

There was a raffle and Echoes of the 60s provided the entertainment. Last year the club donated almost 60,000 euros locally, the majority of which was raised in their shop in Calle Torremolinos in La Cala.

This year the club celebrates 20 years of service to the local community. New members are always welcome; just call in to the charity shop. The shop (677 059 061) is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Donations of clothes and bric-a-brac etc are always appreciated.

The captain's team wins

Santa María Bowls club held their Annual Captain vs President Competition last month.

The finish went down to the last bowl on the last end and the Captain's team came out the winners by three shots. The afternoon was completed with a meal and a talent night.
