Alfred and Amaia will represent Spain in the next Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Lisbon between the 8 and 12 May.
The duo gained 43 per cent of the audience’s vote at a special edition of ‘Operación Triunfo’, a music reality television programme, with ‘Tu canción’, a piano ballad about first love composed by Raúl Gómez and Sylvia Santoro.
“I think that we’ve experienced something real and this had been appreciated by the public.
They’re a delight,” Gómez said of the young singers, who are favourites to win the final of the talent show this coming Monday.
‘Operación Triunfo’ was first aired in 2001 and became one of the most popular Spanish television programmes of all time in its first few seasons, but later struggled to compete with other shows such as ‘The X Factor’ and ‘The Voice’.
It was cancelled in 2011. However, its 2017 reboot has seen a huge resurgence in its popularity.
