Desiree Carrera from Malaga, was proclaimed Andalusian champion beer puller out of twenty contestants for the title in Cordoba last week. The competition, Campeonato de Tiraje de Cerveza, was organised by the Estrella Galicia company and the finals are being held in Madrid at the beginning of next year.

Desiree has been working for the last year at La Cervezoteca in Alhaurín de la Torre and this is the first time she has taken part in a competition. A graduate in Philology, she started working at the bar to save money for her Masters degree.

I discovered the fascinating world of beer and I was hooked, she admitted. She is still planning to continue her studies although she said that she would like to combine the two careers.

For Desiree, the secret is to keep smiling. Technique is very important but points were awarded for other aspects as well, she said. Besides the title she was also awarded 600 euros.

Judge Fernando Iglesias explained how a glass of beer should be pulled. He said that the inside of the glass should be moistened first to chill it and the first shot of froth should be rejected. The glass should be tilted 45 degrees with the wrist held vertically, and the beer should be topped with three centimetres of creamy froth.
