There are few things that define the Costa del Sol quite like a freshly-grilled sardine espeto (skewer), accompanied by a cool glass of tinto de verano. For this reason, Diario SUR has teamed up with La Casera, the brand famous for its pre-made tinto de verano, to help residents find the best espeto in the province.
From 26 May until 11 June, almost 100 chiringuitos and restaurants along the coast will take part in the first Ruta del espeto competition.
The contest is a celebration of the typical Malaga dish that has been eaten here since the end of the 14th century, while at the same time promoting the restaurants and chiringuitos that make this dish for thousands of residents and tourists every day.
Many of the participating restaurants can be found in Fuengirola, Torrox, Marbella and Malaga city. However, for any readers interested in taking part in the search, a bilingual guide, found inside the Spanish edition of SUR today (Friday), contains the complete list of all the competing restaurants, with some information about each one.
Each chiringuito and restaurant will serve espetos, priced between four and seven euros, alongside a complimentary glass from La Casera. Diners can then rate the restaurants from one to 10 on www.rutadelespeto.es between 26 May and 11 June, which automatically enters them into raffle which offers a three-day romantic holiday as its prize.
Professional food critics will also judge the restaurants based on the quality of their barbecues and, of course, the flavour of their sardines. The winners of both the public and judges vote will also receive prizes.
