A new art gallery, run by English couple, Wendy Holmes and her partner Doug Elliot, has opened in Periana. 'La Galería' has been open since the end of January and exhibits work by local Spanish and foreign artists.
The current collection has paintings, photography and collages by six different artists and the works are for sale.
Future planned exhibitions include art using natural material such as stones, palm leaves and esparto grass, as well as photography.
The project is the brainchild of Wendy and Doug, who have lived in Periana for 11 years. Wendy is a retired tax inspector from Dorset and Doug is a retired businessman from London.
Doug, 72, says that he has always had an interest in art and at the age of 20 bought his first piece from an artist on Bayswater Road in London for 110 pounds. "I have had it valued and I can tell you it's worth quite a bit more now," says Doug, He bought it, he says, because he was "looking for something blue" to match his office.
Wendy, 56, says that she became interested in art through Doug, but confesses that she is not particularly artistic herself. "My dad was a very good photographer and I think I learned something from him, but not really enough to take it up seriously," she says.
At the moment visits to La Galería, which overlooks the Viñuela reservoir just outside the town, are by appointment only and the couple are hoping to run monthly events and combine some of them with fundraising for local charities.
The website is updated regularly and includes information on making appointments as well as forthcoming events.
