La Paz University Hospital trial to aid Butterfly Skin research

  • The hospital will carry out a clinical trial attempting to use stem cells to treat the disease

La Paz Univerity Hospital will carry out a clinical trial this year to determine how mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone barrow can be used to heal wounds caused by recessive dystrophic Epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a type of Butterfly Skin.

The trial will be carried out by the Department of Haematology and Dermatology at La Paz University Hospital in collaboration with CIBERER (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras), CIEMAT, UC3M and IIS-FJD. It is being led by Dr Raúl de Lucas (La Paz Hospital) and Dr María José Escámez.

The project has a budget of 308, 000 euros of which the association "DEBRA" will be contributing 80,000 euros. At present the trial is being approved by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Sanitary Products.
