Sharpish practice

ANDREW J. LINN

Consumers are largely unfamiliar with what are known as buyer's own brand (BOB) or private label wines. Until now they have not been common in the Spanish market, but the countdown has begun, and very soon their wine shelves and those of big wine ... producing the original wine and the consumer, as what is effectively happening is that the retailer is pirating a good product and the customer is getting a poorer wine. The practice is immoral and unethical, but unstoppable. Although El Corte Inglés was ... the first store to do this many years ago, probably with no evil intent, Lidl, Aldi and the like are now operating it aggressively. In the USA and northern Europe there is not a major wine retailer that has not adopted this deplorable practice. All

ANDREW J. LINN

The name Orange Wine is misleading. While there does actually exist a type of wine in Huelva Province that is officially known as 'vino de naranja', this is only because the recently pressed white grapes are allowed to cuddle up to some orange peel ... for as long as it takes to adopt the desired amber tone and smoothish taste. Otherwise vino de naranja, orange wine, never sees an orange or indeed any other fruit that is not a grape. WINE OF THE WEEK Les Crestes Wines from the Priorato region ... of the Pyrenees have a reputation for being high in alcohol and expensive. This young wine of the year is neither, at 14.5% alcohol and around 17€. Mainly Garnacha grape, and aged for eight months in oak, it has a delightfully concentrated taste.

Can somms survive Covid?

ANDREW J. LINN

...themselves whether they really need sommeliers at all. A general manager with a knowledge of wine can negotiate with suppliers, and waiters can be trained to a level at which customers are happy to consult them. In one famous Seville restaurant there is ... now no sommelier at all, something facilitated by drastic cutting down of the wine list from 300 wines to 80. Becoming a sommelier has always been a precarious career choice, so perhaps Covid has finally put the last nail in the somm's coffin.

Spit or swallow?

ANDREW J. LINN

When we read about or watch videos of professional wine tastings, the most surprising thing is the sheer amount of wine the tasters get through. Professional critics and wine writers have always been capable of dealing with vast quantities, and Tim ... the discipline involved is not something with which every wine enthusiast is gifted. When I started in the business, one of the hardest self-restraints at tastings was to learn to spit out good wine rather than swallow it. What a waste, I used to ... think, almost an insult to the poor winemaker. There must be a better way. Even the very act of spitting in public makes most people uncomfortable, but in spite of consuming large quantities of water and unsalted biscuits between each wine sample, I
