17 April 1492: Christopher Columbus obtains funding for his first voyage

Columbus didn't waste any time. He set off on this voyage from Palos de la Frontera, in Huelva province, on 3 August. There were 90 men on three ships: the Pinta and the Niña, both small caravels, and the larger Santa María. He didn't achieve his aim of ... natives called it Haiti) on 5 December. Santa raises funds for Wobbles Children's Charity

Santa's Grotto and other events at Ocean Village have raised over £2,200 for the Wobbles Children's Charity, during a magical eight-day Christmas festival. Founder Frankie Hatton said Wobbles was thrilled at being chosen: "As a children's charity, ... seeing the children arriving in their droves for just over a week to meet Santa and the other Disney characters was a really worthwhile and rewarding experience for us."
