Drop in temperatures brings snow to inland Malaga province

Agustín Peláez / Ignacio Lillo

The strange sight on a Fuengirola beach

ÁNGEL DE LOS RÍOS

Could there be snow on the Costa del Sol? It certainly seemed that way in an image that went viral on social media on Monday, showing the beach in Fuengirola covered in a blanket of white. However, it has since been proved that this unusual image ... was as a result of an intense hailstorm which struck the resort. This was confirmed by Aemet, the Spanish met office, which confirmed that conditions were “all wrong” for snow to have fallen. The beach didn't stay like this for long. Despite

The snowflake generation

Peter Edgerton

It all came as a bit of a beautiful shock when snow fell on the Costa del Sol this week. Ok, I'm sure Captain Oates wouldn't have been too discombobulated at the intensity of the falling flakes but it it was quite a moment nonetheless. Snow is ... perhaps the most evocative of all meteorological phenomena. Balmy summer evenings, unexpected rain storms and soft autumn winds all have an important role in stirring memories within us but there's nothing like a bit of snow to tickle our nostalgia ... into the office charged with a much more heinous crime (fighting in the dining room, I think). Old Crofty's attentions were immediately turned to more important matters and - phew! - I was off the hook. There's no doubt about it - snow and nostalgia

The price of the cold

Héctor Barbotta

In the old days they called it winter, but as climate change has turned meteorology into a strange anomaly it has now become known as a "Siberian cold front". This week much of the province of Malaga saw a covering of snow; you don't have to have ... such a fantastic memory, but just be over a certain age, to recall that snow in the north of the Axarquía, in Las Pedrizas or in the Sierra de las Nieves (which is called that for a reason, although future generations may need photographic evidence) ... was, if not a yearly occurrence, at least once every two years. But today snow is news, just like anything that changes the routine of the majority of people. The planet has been suffering abuse for too many decades now and winters are growing shorter
