Messi the Magnificent

Rob Palmer

...planet. It makes a mockery of the English fans who complained about the prices to see the match at the Camp Nou. Any game starring Lionel Messi should have a premium payment. What would you pay to see Pelé in his prime, George Best at his most ... dazzling or the Johan Cruyff ballet? It also makes a mockery of the pretentious fools who voted the Argentinian as the fifth best player in the world at the Ballon d'Or awards of 2018. Messi's actions speak louder than any words we can find to describe ... and never will be anything like him. Ronaldo is up there. He's possibly the best scorer of goals and he's carrying Juventus like he used to carry Real Madrid, but Messi is something else. Bear in mind that when he started he was the supporting act

The best there's ever been

Rob Palmer

As a guest on Liverpool FC's global TV station, I was put on the spot this week when asked if Lionel Messi really deserved to be crowned the best player in the world ahead of their own giant Virgil van Dijk. I referred the host back to an old ... commentary line of mine: "Lionel Messi is the best there is, the best there has ever been and probably the best there ever will be." It could be argued that van Dijk was Liverpool's MVP, the most valuable player, as they claimed their sixth European title ... and he rightly ran the little Argentinian close. In the eyes of Liverpool fans, the Dutchman is the boss; but in the mind of the rest of the football world, Messi is still the marvel. It's significant that by taking the title for a sixth time he

A gap opening up

...come close to reaching the standards of a Barcelona player and Martin Braithwaite was a bizarre panic signing. In an ideal world, Luis Suárez would have been sold last summer and Lionel Messi would be utilised far more sparingly. It's hard to put a ... game time, but they are years away from their peak. Nobody was surprised when it was reported that the whole first team squad was available for potential transfer. Reports have emerged about even Messi contemplating leaving the club. This would ... normally be unthinkable, but it may be a consideration. Plans must be made for post-Messi life. Do they cash in right now to splash out on an alternative superstar? Break the bank to invest in Kylian Mbappé or swallow their pride and re-sign Neymar?

Don't miss Messi

Rob Palmer

Have you ever tried swatting a bluebottle on a hot summer's day, in a room with very high ceilings? That's what it's like trying to catch Lionel Messi. One minute you are on a stool, the next on your knees. Now he's showcased his mesmeric powers ... Modric FIFA World Player of the year should shave off their hipster beards in shame too. Ok, he was "Best Player" they'll argue. No he wasn't, Lionel Messi was and is. This is like 1969. That year "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies was the bestselling single ... sporting presence at the same time! I'm honoured to have commentated on his finest club moments since day one. With most players you identify them and then the ball is passed on. With Messi, it's like a sitting with a magician. You know he's about to

Unstoppable

Rob Palmer

Occasionally when I was commentating on a Lionel Messi wondergoal I'd be concerned that I'd gone over the top with the hyperbole. "The best there is, the best there has ever been and the best there will ever be..." was how I verbosely summed up ... confirmed that the Argentinian had surpassed the standards of the best there had previously been. Normally Messi breezes through a game, picking and choosing his moments to ignite the occasion with his brilliance. At the end of the semi-final with ... tank at the finishing line than Lionel Messi. Jürgen Klopp commented after the game: "I couldn't be more proud." This seemed odd given the 3-0 scoreline yet it was one of his team's best performances under his leadership. "I was completely happy. It

Supreme Court upholds Messi’s 21-month prison sentence

M. BALÍN madrid

The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal launched by Lionel Messi’s defence lawyers against the 21-month suspended prison sentence handed to the famous Argentinian footballer by a Barcelona court last year. Messi and his father were accused of ... failing to declare his image rights to the Spanish tax authorities from 2007 to 2009, thus avoiding 4.1 million euros in tax. His father, Jorge Horacio Messi had his sentence reduced from 21 to 15 months by the top appeal court. Neither men will go to

Héctor Barbotta

Following their traumatic qualification campaign in which their participation in the World Cup hung in the balance right until the last moment, Lionel Messi and his teammates will be looking for some tranquility in the build-up to the main event ... namely privacy for the players, many of whom are high-profile names in the sport - led by five-time Ballor d'Or winner Lionel Messi.
