Mostly losers

ANDREW J. LINN

This wine from the famous Barbadillo winery in Sanlúcar de Barrameda is not technically a sherry, in spite of being made of the usual Palomino grapes and grown on the white albariza soil of the región. It is a white table wine fermented in old sherry ... vintage is better than last year's, there is even talk of tipping the 2019 down the drain. The other option of course is not to make any wine this year, and let the grapes rot on the vine. That means no income for the winery until this thing is over,

Champagne has its moments

ANDREW J. LINN

French, sales are not buoyant anywhere, and the reasons could hardly be simpler in spite of explanations that are offered on a semi-official level, ranging from French street protests to tax rises on sales of grapes. Disingenuously the big champagne houses

Yunquera festival to promote local wine and chestnuts

Tony Bryant

The village of Yunquera is gearing up for the 11th edition of the popular Feria de Vino y la Castaña, a gastronomic festival that promotes local chestnuts and mosto wine, a grape juice that adheres to an age old local recipe. The Wine and Chestnut ... that is made from grapes grown in the Sierra de las Nieves. The juice is made with freshly crushed grapes and contains the skins, seeds, and stems of the fruit. The Sierras de Ronda is considered one of the best chestnut producing regions in Andalucía,

Orange wine

ANDREW J. LINN

The name Orange Wine is misleading. While there does actually exist a type of wine in Huelva Province that is officially known as 'vino de naranja', this is only because the recently pressed white grapes are allowed to cuddle up to some orange peel ... for as long as it takes to adopt the desired amber tone and smoothish taste. Otherwise vino de naranja, orange wine, never sees an orange or indeed any other fruit that is not a grape. WINE OF THE WEEK Les Crestes Wines from the Priorato region ... of the Pyrenees have a reputation for being high in alcohol and expensive. This young wine of the year is neither, at 14.5% alcohol and around 17€. Mainly Garnacha grape, and aged for eight months in oak, it has a delightfully concentrated taste.

It's an ill wind...

...appellation. This red crianza is aged for 12 months in the wood and then the same in the bottle. It is made with tempranillo (tinta fina) grapes. Priced at around 11 euros. Madrid and Barcelona appear to be slow on the uptake, but in London (where this

Australia on fire

ANDREW J. LINN

...everything that mattered for him except life itself. Now faced with the cost of creating another vineyard, acquiring machinery, and waiting years until the grapes would be mature enough to make a wine that could be sold, the economic effects, probably ... could not survive. Questions are being asked about the fundamental viability of producing wine in what is certainly becoming the hottest area of the world where grapes grow. But wine is huge business, and apart from consuming 30 litres per head

...such as that one or other of the producers was illegally using grapes bought in from other regions, etc, were common. That war, with no clear winner, is over, but the new one will be even more drawn-out. WINE OF THE WEEK Las Rocas de San Alejandro ... in 2015 nine bodegas left the controlling organisation, the Consejo Regulador, and formed their own club, Corpinnat. Praiseworthily their rules were, and are, that only specific grapes from the region can be used, and these must be organic and

Los locos

ANDREW J. LINN

...said about most white wines made from the ubiquitous Verdejo grape variety. Cheap and cheerful would be a little harsh, but it really is necessary from time to time to make the effort to find one that stands out from the crowd. This one, from the Alta ... it all comes down to resentment - envy by those who are nervous about appearing to not accept the pattern for such matters. God's grape The choice of grape variety can gives rise to perceptions of being different for the sake of it. This is not ... the case as far as the Ortega brothers are concerned. It is said the Tempranillo grape (Spain's most widespread) was made by God and Pinot Noir by the devil, encapsulating how the variety is delicate and requires more pampering than, say, Tempranillo
