Call for volunteers to watch over turtle eggs on Cabopino beach

Héctor Barbotta

A local environmental group is calling for volunteers to help protect turtle eggs buried on Cabopino beach before they hatch in October. When a loggerhead turtle laid her eggs on busy Los Boliches beach in Fuengirola in early August, there was ... little chance of their survival and them hatching successfully. In keeping with environmental practice, officials moved the 60 plus eggs to the beach by Cabopino port with the help of the Pro Dunas Association, which campaigns to protect the coastal ... area around Marbella. A special round-the-clock watch has now been put on the site. Volunteers are being sought until 4 October, but if the eggs still haven't hatched by then, a new plan will be put in place until 15 October.

An incubator in the sand on Marbella beach

CHARO MÁRQUEZ

A pregnant mother arrived silently on Monday night last week on the Los Boliches beach in Fuengirola. In the darkness she made a hole in the sand and laid 73 eggs. She carefully covered them up and left. The mother was a loggerhead sea turtle. The ... future of her offspring was left at the mercy of the tides and the hundreds of people who go every day to the busy beach. There is no other record of a loggerhead turtle laying eggs on the Costa del Sol for the last 80 years. The news of this ... important, even extraordinary event, soon reached the Andalusian marine sustainable management centre (CEGMA), who arrived to take care of the eggs in collaboration with Fuengirola town hall, the Local Police and the emergency services. 50-60 days

A very poor eggsample

Peter Edgerton

Scrambled eggs, cornflakes, uncomfortable silences and creaky stairs. That's about the sum total of my childhood recollections of bed and breakfast establishments in the UK in the 1970s. Unless you count a very odd man in Kent who owned one of these ... Unfortunately, a lack of foresight - and indeed, will - on my part means that my fate now depends largely, and somewhat precariously, on scrambled eggs and cornflakes. Hence the seventies B & B throwback thing. How on earth people can claim they enjoy cooking

The ancient tradition of giving eggs at Easter

Tony Bryant

Most of us take for granted the association of eggs with Easter, particularly when that association involves elegantly wrapped chocolate eggs filled with Smarties or sugared almonds. The tradition of painting hard-boiled eggs inspring pre-dates ... depicted as the judge that evaluated whether children were good or disobedient at the start of the season of Eastertide. The custom was first mentioned in 1682, referring to a German tradition of an Easter hare bringing Easter eggs for the children. The ... Christian custom of Easter eggs started among the early Christians of Mesopotamia. The Christian church officially adopted the custom as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ in 1610. The Easter egg symbolises the empty tomb of Christ and one ancient

FERNANDO TORRES

British, who considered plundering their nests to be the only means of conservation. Orthodox Christians plan Easter in isolation

ALEKK M. SAANDERS

For us, Lent is a strict 40-day fasting when we really give up meat, eggs, and butter and in addition abstain from dancing and other frivolous activities. "After ... cheese, dyed hard-boiled eggs, butter, lard, horseradish cream, smoked ham, sausage, blood pudding, vodka or moonshine and, as a rule, fortified dessert wine.
