As visitors from the UK flew in to Gibraltar on Monday, when the British government's 'green light travel' scheme came into force, there was a last-minute change to the entry requirements and people were asked to take a rapid lateral flow test, at no charge, upon arrival at the airport.

The Gibraltar government explained that the move had been decided in light of comments by UK prime minister Boris Johnson expressing concerns about the Indian variant of the virus and after discussions with Gibraltar Health Authority Consultant Microbiologist Dr Nick Cortes. The decision was taken before the first flight arrived from the UK.

Gibraltar is currently Covid-free for the first time since 21 July last year, and there have been no cases among the local population since 6 April, although a few cases were detected in visitors. The authorities are keen to keep it that way.
