Gibraltar's Moorish castle illuminated in blue in appreciation of healthcare professionals

  • Ships in the bay also sounded their sirens to show their support for essential services

Gibraltar's iconic Moorish castle is glowing blue every evening during the coronavirus crisis in a show of support for essential services and healthcare professionals.

This began yesterday at 8pm, the time when many local people go out onto their balconies to cheer and applaud those who are working to keep the population safe. Ships in the bay also sounded their sirens to show their support.

Announcing the move, chief minister Fabian Picardo said he hoped everyone would continue to join in at 8 o'clock every evening, clapping and shouting to express their support for "those who are risking their own health to help others and keep our community ticking over".
