Lieutenant General Edward Davis is saying farewell to the Rock next week and leaving with his wife Lorraine, as his term of office as the Governor of Gibraltar has now come to an end.

The couple became very popular in Gibraltar after the Governor took up the post in January 2016 and in a speech at a reception organised this week the chief minister, Fabian Picardo, said: "Ed and Lorraine took to Gibraltar immediately upon arrival and had no trouble in settling into our close community. The sentiments were reciprocated as the people of Gibraltar very soon became fond of them and we took them as ours."

Picardo also referred to the excellent relationship between the Governor and the Gibraltar government, saying it had been an easy ride to have "Ed" across the street and that he had been "a personal support, friend and brother" and "has been a stalwart support of Gibraltar in the way in which he has discharged the difficult role of Governor under the 2006 Constitution".

The Governor was presented with a farewell gift, a mini replica in sterling silver of the Iron Keys to the Fortress of Gibraltar.

A new Governor will be appointed by the Queen, on the advice of the UK government, in the forthcoming months.
