  • This came after its captain warned that there were 89 suspected cases of Norovirus among the 868 passengers and 513 crew on board

The Spirit of Discovery cruise ship, which was due to visit Gibraltar on Saturday was asked not to do so and to continue its journey to Southampton after its captain warned that there were 89 suspected cases of Norovirus among the 868 passengers and 513 crew on board.

The warning was given as the ship approached the Rock.

In a press release issued on the same day, the Gibraltar government stressed that this had nothing whatsoever to do with the Coronavirus which is causing so much concern at present.

The symptoms of Norovirus are diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. It is very contagious and can be dangerous for people whose immune systems are weak, such as those with other illnesses and the elderly.

It has an incubation period of 12 to 48 hours.
