The 'Rowing Marine' sets off on an epic journey from Gibraltar

Lee Spencer, who is raising money for the Royal Marines Charity and the Endeavour Fund, is aiming to row 3,500 miles solo

Stormy days lay ahead but Lee Spencer, the 'Rowing Marine', was all smiles before setting off from Ocean Village on Tuesday for an epic journey, rowing solo and unsupported to Venezuela.

Lee, a former marine who lost a leg in an accident, is raising money for the Royal Marines Charity and the Endeavour Fund. He aims to be the world's first physically disabled person to row this route from Europe to South America alone and without support, set a new Guinness World Record and prove, as he says, that "there is life beyond injury".

Lee will also attempt to beat the current able bodied record of 96 days, 12 hours and 45 minutes which was set by Stein Hoff in 2002.

Lee, who was undaunted by the prospect of battling 30-foot waves, sleep deprivation, extreme fatigue, fear and solitude, is issuing progress updates on Twitter at @_leejspencer.
