Decades ago, there used to be a saying: "Be there or be square." Well, if anyone wasn't at the MTV Gibraltar Calling Music Festival last weekend, that saying could definitely apply. However, they could be forgiven for not realising that in this case the music is not just for the younger, hipper members of society: Gibraltar welcomes all ages to its music festival, and the choice of artists reflects that.
Thousands of people packed the Victoria Stadium on the afternoons and evenings of last Friday and Saturday for this event, which is the biggest of its type in the area. They sang, they danced, they forgot their troubles for a few hours as they were entertained by some of the world's most famous performers, up-and-coming names and popular local artists, with the glorious backdrop of the Rock of Gibraltar outshining even the most beautiful of those on stage.
There were far too many artists to mention them all, but highlights included Rita Ora, R3Wire & Varski, Stormzy, The Boomtown Rats, Rag 'N' Bone Man, Texas, Two Door Cinema Club, Sister Sledge, Scouting for Girls, and many more.
This has become a huge music event, in a unique venue and a fantastic atmosphere. September 2019: definitely a date for the diary.
