Chief minister Fabian Picardo has responded to a claim made this week by Spain's former foreign minister, José Manuel García Margallo, that a meeting had been arranged between the two men last year.

In a statement, Picardo confirmed that Margallo had requested a meeting, despite publicly insisting that he would only deal with the UK over Gibraltar or in the context of a quadrilateral forum with the Junta de Andalucia. However, the chief minister told him that he would only discuss non-sovereignty matters and that the meeting should not be secret. “Given my reply, I did not receive a further response,” he said.
