The Gibraltar Health Authority is carrying out reforms to improve the Accident and Emergency department. The measures have included deploying two additional charge nurses to the department, so a highly skilled senior member of the nursing staff leads and manages the A&E team on every shift. The A&E services are also being streamlined to concentrate on providing timely care for accidents, emergencies and acutely unwell patients. Extensions to sick certificates will now be issued by GPs and not the A&E department.
More than 500 GP appointments a month have already been saved by the introduction of a repeat prescription service, as part of the scheme to make medical services as efficient as possible.
