  • Thick black smoke and fumes were emitted on the Spanish mainland after an alleged electrical fault

Thick black smoke filled the air around the CEPSA refinery on the Spanish mainland last weekend, as the result of what was reported to have been an electrical fault. As the wind direction was east/southeast at the time the smoke and fumes were blown away from Gibraltar, but local residents were concerned at the effects of this unprecedented level of flaring on the air quality. Environmental Agency experts immediately began to investigate the impact it may have had on Gibraltar.

Meanwhile, the Gibraltar government issued a statement to say that it is taking decisive action to follow the matter up at the highest levels, and would be raising the issue with the EU Commission as a matter of urgency.
