A Marbella youngster is celebrating after being offered a professional football contract at just 17 years of age.
Yuri Ruh dos Santos is the first under-18 player from Marbella to make an international transfer - after being offered a contract to play for AS Trenčín, an affiliate club of Ajax in the Netherlands.
Nicknamed “Magic Feet”, the Marbella FC player will play his first international match with them in Amsterdam at the Copa de Amsterdam this weekend.
Left winger Yuri, of dual Canadian and Portuguese nationality, was born in Montreal, Canada and moved to Spain at the age of one. He has been living with his mother Kathya in Marbella ever since.
Moving away
Yuri, who has also had trials for West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Getafe CF, a first division club in Madrid, said that moving away from home would be tough.
“Of course I’m going to miss my hometown, all of my friends that I grew up with, especially my best friends Tony Drouhin and Nico Sempere Pedrero, my big brother, and my mother who are always there for me no matter what; but I have a dream and I’m pursuing it.
“I just have one message for all of you out there who have a dream. No matter how hard it gets, no matter how many times people tell you to stop dreaming. Don’t! Dreams do come true, if you stay focused, believe in them, believe in yourself and be ready to work hard and give it your all to achieve them.”
Last summer AS Trenčín invited Yuri for trials but he wasn’t ready to move away from home.
Commenting on his move to Holland, he added: “I just want to play football and that’s the opportunity they are offering me; to make a living doing what I love more than anything.”
