The drastic decision was announced this morning through the Sheikh’s Twitter account, “I’m sorry to say this, yes [I] will go from here”.
Last month, Al Thani threatened he may leave following a series of bureaucratic complications. He has been unable to come to an agreement with the Ayuntamiento with regards to a construction of a football academy on the outskirts of Malaga.
He has also been attempting to buy La Rosaleda stadium without success. But because of a lack of “respect and appreciation and equality” he will depart.
In recognition for his investment in the club, the Ayuntamiento named a roundabout after the Sheikh near the stadium last month.
At the end of the season the Sheikh praised fans for their support: “thank you from the bottom of my heart, I love you all,” he stated.
After turbulent season with the team struggling to avoid relegation, Al Thani looked to the future stating that “the best is yet to come”.
He bought the club in 2010 for 36 million euros and his team had initial success, making it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League two seasons ago. However, due to financial complications, major players were sold along with manager Manuel Pellegrini.
