More than 80 amateur players took part in the competition that was held at Doña Julia Golf Resort in Casares
The third round of the 30th anniversary tour took place on Sunday at one of the Costa del Sol’s most impressive courses, Doña Julia. This was the third of four qualifying rounds of the tournament. The grand final will be contested at Los Flamingos Golf Course at the end of June.
José Duarte and Miguel Cid came first in their respective categories. The conditions were perfect for golf with blue skies and no wind enabling the players to complete the course in a good time.
The tournament, that is played under the Individual Stableford format, is sponsored by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental and the company Acosol.
Five other players from both categories also qualified for the final round. They were: Andreas Maaland, Lorenzo Gil, Alan Quarmby, Juan José Martín, Peter Gruetter, Francisco López, Rafael Gambero, Salvador Márquez, Álvaro Bertrán and Luis Fernando. Each of the players commented on the quality of the greens. In the final they will have the chance to win a Rolex watch, donated by Joyería Aurelio Marcos, if they achieve a hole-in-one.
Doña Julia, situated between Marbella and Sotogrande, is just kilometres from Gibraltar. It is an 18-hole course and consists of almost 6,000 metres squared with spectacular panoramic views of the African coast.
Doña Julia was designed by prominent Malaga golf course architect, Antonio García Garrido, who is responsible for the construction of some of Spain’s most important golf courses.
“The good conditions of the courses, along with the high amount of participants competing in every round round, have been the main attractions of this tour,” said Francisco Gómez, manager of Andalucía Golf Select.
The event is organised by SURin English, Costa del Golf and is sponsored by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, the business Acosol, Aurelio Marcos Jewellers, Riverval Grupo and the car dealership C. de Salamanca. Golfriends, Turismo Andaluz, BoConcept, Copyrap and the five courses in which the championship is held: Río Real, El Paraíso, Villa Padierna, Atalaya and Doña Julia also collaborated with organisers.
The next date of the tour is 10 June and will be held at El Paraiso Golf Club in Estepona that was designed by South African golfer Gary Player. It will be the last chance for some of Spain’s best amateur players to qualify for one of the 68 places in the final that takes place on 28 June.
