Spain’s most international flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucía, dies aged 66
The world of flamenco was shattered on Wednesday by the news of the death of Spain’s most famous guitarist, Paco de Lucía. The musician, who was 66, suffered a heart attack while on holiday with his family in Cancún, Mexico.
De Lucía and his friend the late Camarón de la Isla were known as the great flamenco reformists. Both contributed to the fusion of flamenco with rock, pop and jazz and were responsible for taking their minority art beyond the Spanish borders.
Paco de Lucía toured the globe with his guitar, playing to packed houses in cities such as New York, Moscow, London and Tokyo. He won the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2004.
Three days of official morning have been declared in Algeciras where the legend will be buried once his body has been repatriated.
