The Youth Orchestra representing the province of Malaga is putting on a special concert to mark the 30th anniversary of SUR in English
There’s nothing better than great music for bringing people together for an enjoyable occasion - unless it is great music played by an enthusiastic and talented orchestra of young musicians with a charismatic conductor! That is what SUR in English has prepared for the concert to mark the newspaper’s first 30 years.
The ‘Joven Orquesta Provincial de Málaga’ (‘Youth Orchestra of Malaga Province’), is known as the ‘JOPMA’ and is made up of 130 musicians, with another 70 making up the “orchestra school” which feeds into it. It is considered the largest and most important orchestra of its kind in Spain and has played all over the country as well as touring in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The age range is 12 to 25 years old and, as well as Spanish members, there are young people from other countries including Finland, Morocco and Germany.
The orchestra is a member of The Eurochestries Federation, which was established in 1989 in Paris by Marcel Corneloup to promote orchestral practice amongst young people through international exchange, and to bring classical music into the public consciousness.
Concert in Mijas
The Malaga orchestra has put together an attractive programme of pieces by Purcell, Handel and Mendelssohn, for a concert in Mijas on Sunday November 10th- a suitable setting for the occasion, given the large readership SUR in English has had in the area for 30 years! The concert is free, but to avoid disappointment on the day readers can pick up invitations from various points in Mijas, or reserve a place online HERE
