Robin Alexander, aged 83, is still recovering from his injuries.
“Give me your money”. They woke up to hear these words in the middle of the night.
The darkness meant that they could not see who was speaking. But they could see the knife that he was carrying, in a strip of light made by a gap in the bedroom blinds. The very space that the thief had entered by.
Robin Alexander and his wife were really frightened. “At first I thought it was a dream”, says the elderly British man, aged 83, who was spending a week’s holiday in the apartment in Benalmádena. The events took place at two in the morning on Sunday October 13th. It was only two days before the couple were due to return to London, where they live.
When she saw the intruder, Robin’s wife leapt out of bed and ran out of the room to get help. Robin can still remember her screams.
“Then the intruder went towards her and stabbed her in the chest. Everything happened very quickly, in no more than 30 seconds”. The old man grabbed his walking stick and ran to defend his wife.
“I think I hit him but can’t be sure”, says Robin who was stabbed in the neck. “Then he attacked me. I began to bleed and felt myself fading but I never actually lost consciousness. At that moment I thought I was going to die. He was very violent and wanted our money at whatever cost”, adds the old man.
After the second stabbing, the would-be thief, whose face was partially covered by an item of clothing, fled without taking anything. According to Robin, “I don’t think I’ve seen him before in the area”.
He left the same way that he had come, through the bedroom window which looks out over the communal garden of the block of flats .
Robin’s wife informed their neighbours and the apartment block security guard. “When he arrived I was trying to staunch the wound. I was bleeding heavily”, recalls Robin.
Several police units were dispatched to the scene with a rough description of the attacker. On their way, one of them came across a suspicious looking man with a facial wound and a blood stained shirt.
The police approached the suspect who, on spotting them, attempted to flee but was captured by officers. He apparently recognised as belonging to him a pair of glasses which had been left at the crime scene. The man has been detained for alleged attempted murder, assault and attempted violent robbery.
Robin and his wife were taken to hospital. While she has already been discharged Robin remains in the Clínico hospital. He is recuperating from a serious injury to his neck which required a tracheotomy.
Soon he is due to return to England. But he is already planning to come back. “We are not going to let this stop us coming here”, he told SUR.
