. Last year the solidarity of people around the province far exceeded the expectations of the organisers of the first ‘Gran Recogida’ food collection campaign.
This year they have increased their target accordingly, hoping to collect some 400 tonnes of nonperishable foods at designated collection points on the weekend of November 29th and 30th. Last year the final total was 300 tonnes.
Now the organisers are busy planning the post-collection logistics. Transport firms have come forward to offer their services free of charge.
Luis Andrade, manager of the firm Integra2, is in charge of the coordination of the firms collaborating with transport.
“Last year Seur and Integra2 participated in the Gran Recogida; we brought the pallets and cardboard bins from Barcelona and we delivered them along with the publicity material to the more than 200 collection points, while Seur transported the food from the stores to Bancosol in record time,” he said.
Lack of space
However the Bancosol warehouse ran out of space and an improvised solution had to be found.
This year the transport firms will also provide space in their own warehouses to store the pallets for a period of time - perhaps up to three months - until Bancosol has the room.
Andrade explained that Bancosol has the capacity to process (sort and distribute among associations) 20 pallets of nonperishable foods a day.
Other transport firms have been encouraged to collaborate by offering some of their storage space.
Meanwhile Jerónimo Soriano, manager of Seur, said that his fleet of a hundred delivery vehicles will be working flat out during the Gran Recogida weekend to combine their normal deliveries with the Bancosol trips.
In order to achieve this year’s target of collecting 400 tonnes of food, some 3,000 volunteers will be needed to help out at 400 collection points in supermarkets and stores around the province of Malaga.
How to collaborate with Bancosol
Apart from becoming a volunteer for the Gran Recogida members of the public can help Bancosol in a number of different ways. The organisation needs volunteers all year round to collaborate with different projects while cash donations can be made into the Bancosol account in Unicaja.
One campaign, known as 100x6, invites people to donate six euros so that the organisation can manage the leftover foods that normally go to waste during food processing. Another option is to buy stickers with the Bancosol logo for a price of six euros. These can be obtained through 952179579 or email email@example.com
