Artists from an inland art group are hosting an exhibition of their work having been encouraged to “break free” and express themselves by group leader Anne Hird.
“The exhibition at the Casa de Cultura in Alhaurín el Grande is about pushing the boundaries in as many ways as possible,” explains Anne, adding “One unusual aspect of the exhibition is that there will be an artist in residence at the Casa de Cultura every day, so visitors will be able to see the process of painting as it happens.”
Anne explains that the group originally started with a garden party at her home three years ago and then developed into the weekly Finca Vida Art Group which meets on Wednesday mornings at Restaurante Aguamania, between Cártama and Coín.
“We began with six weeks practising the building blocks of painting in sketchbooks using light, colour, lines, perspective and so on but there really is no substitute for just looking,” says Anne.
After the initial introduction to techniques, the group then started taking part in exercises such as using view finders to select one object in a wide landscape or painting everything they could see in a small square on the ground. Another project involved drawing a tree using charcoal, copying the picture in pastels, then reproducing it again in oil paints and then watercolours and so on.
“When you get to the 10th incarnation of the picture you see something very different. You never go backwards. Each picture is a stepping stone to something else,” says Anne, who has painted her whole life and says that art school taught her to think differently.
While some members of the group have been painting and drawing for years, for others, the group has been a chance to try something new.
“There are no prima donnas and they are all so supportive of each other. Together we have had a great deal of fun preparing for this exhibition and especially, as it is a first for each of them. It has been all about trying out different techniques such as using candles, coffee, dyes and experimenting with mixed media, like painting over photographs. The group have been looking at lots of art catalogues for inspiration.”
What has surprised the Finca Vida painters is the response to the news that there would be a member of the group painting as part of the exhibition each day. Anne says “What took me aback was people’s incredibly enthusiastic reception to the idea!”
