Relief in Malaga as street cleaners call off Holy Week strike
Workers vote to call off the strike on Thursday. Salvador Salas
The strike called by the Limasa street cleaners in the city of Malaga during Holy Week has been on and off all week, but the threat was finally lifted on Thursday.
On Tuesday preliminary agreements had been reached between the City Hall and the workers’ representatives which indicated that the protest action, affecting one of the city’s busiest weeks of the year, was to be called off.
However at a staff assembly on Wednesday night workers rejected the agreements reached, which had included a pay cut. They would still strike, they said, unless the mayor agreed not to touch their salaries.
On Thursday they were convinced that their pay would stay intact, although further negotiations are still pending at a later date.
Meanwhile the attitude of the Limasa workers caused indignation among residents and business owners who considered they were “blackmailing” the city .
Around 50 processions are due to take place in Malaga from Sunday, attracting thousands of tourists. The representative of bar and restaurant owners Rafael Prados had said on Wednesday that they would find a way of cleaning the streets and removing rubbish themselves, if necessary.
