Government plans to raise speed limit to 130 kph on some roads
The maximum speed limit is currently at 120 kph
The General Traffic Department (DGT) has announced reforms to the existing traffic circulation regulations that affect speed limits and safety measures. The draft bill envisages raising the speed limit to 130kph on some stretches of motorway and introducing new limits of between 50 and 90 kph on secondary roads. Speed limits in some built-up areas will be reduced to 30 kph.
The government argues that three quarters of all road accidents with victims occur on conventional roads and therefore the speeds limits will vary from 50 to 90 kph depending on the width of the carriageway.
The reduction to 30 kph in some built-ups areas will, says the government, “calm urban traffic, encourage the use of bicycles and reduce accidents.”
The draft also bans the use of radar detectors.
No seat belt exemptions
The reform also aims to abolish practically all the current exemptions to the seat belt law. This means that the drivers of taxis, delivery vans and emergency service vehicles will be required to wear a seat belt, as will any drivers currently in possession of an exception certificate due to illness or disability.
Another change is to prohibit children with a height of under 135 centimetres to travel in the front seat of a car and children under the age of four with child seats in the groups 0, 0+ and 1 will be required to travel backwards if the seat allows.
