Baby abandoned in garden by mother dies in hospital
The mother in handcuffs after appearing in court. J.L.
The baby found in an Estepona garden shortly after she was born was pronounced dead in the Hospital Materno on Wednesday last week. She was barely a week old and had been brain dead since last Monday as a result of severe head injuries.
A family from Kazakhstan, on holiday in Estepona, had found the newborn on Wednesday the week before in the garden of an uninhabited house next door to where they were staying in El Paraíso Barronal. Investigating a noise which they thought might be the mewing of a kitten they found the baby, wrapped in a blanket and suffering from hypothermia and head injuries, and having difficulty breathing. She was taken first to the Hospital Costa del Sol and later transferred to the maternity hospital in Malaga where she was found to have two skull fractures and internal bleeding.
The police identified and arrested the baby’s mother, a 20-year-old Russian who was working as nanny for the family who found the infant. According to SUR sources, she claims she thought the baby was born dead. She is being held in custody charged with attempted murder.
