The first passengers since the 'Costa Concordia' accident
Malaga Port is suffering no effects after the 'Costa Concordia' accident and on Friday 27th the city will receive the first avalanche of passengers since the incident. About 8,000 of them will arrive on board two large ships, one of which belongs to the Costa Cruceros company. Sources at the Port insist that there have been no cancellations or changes of plan by the shipping companies after the Italian shipwreck, although the sector fears that the demand may drop among people who have never been on a cruise before. For now, it is business as usual in Malaga, which closed last year with visits by more than 650,000 passengers, a figure which was similar to 2010.
Safety
On Tuesday 24th, European Transport Commissioner Sim Kallas announced that he is propose that the International Maritime Organisation's safety regulations be improved, following the sinking of the Italian cruiseliner 'Costa Concordia', because passenger safety is paramount in the rising cruise sector.
Meanwhile, a report has indicated that cruise ships are a safe way to travel. Cruise liners transported 98.2 million passengers around the world between 2005 and 2010, and registered only five deaths attributable to maritime incidents. Despite the 'Costa Concordia' accident, the industry has a safety ratio of 0.16 per million passengers (0.000016%), which is better than the 0.30 per million in the air travel industry. The report analysed incidents involving collisions, technical failure, fire, running aground, ice and storms.
