The demure-looking Marianne Faithfull of her very early years, or the heading for down-and-out, rasping-voiced Marianne Faithfull of the sex, drugs and roll‘n’roll Rolling Stones era both feature memorably in the history of her generation. Another Marianne Faithfull continues to make history - a charming Marianne with a gentle, warm voice who is in Malaga for “An intimate evening” at the Cervantes theatre on July 10th.
1’How has the summer tour been so far?
Tiring, but very enjoyable! The last part, in Scandinavia, was really hard work - it is an acoustic tour, the first one I’ve done since the 1990s, but I_have a wonderful guitarrist, Doug Pettibone, and it can get very emotional - I_love it.
2’Will you be singing ‘The Ballad of Lucy Jordan’ at the concert in Malaga? (Marianna laughs) Yes of course!
3’Do you feel any affinity with Lucy Jordan when you sing it?
Oh yes, I didn’t write the song, but I have always identified with Lucy, I understand just how she would go mad in that situation. (Living in a suburb with nothing to do all day but housework and flower arranging, dreaming of things she will never do). I think a lot of women must feel like that, feel that they are going mad.
4’So Lucy does go mad at the end of the song?
I’ve always thought so, yes - she is taken off in a white ambulance. Some people think she goes mad and dies, but I think at the very end she is not mad, she recovers....
5’You said once that you needed to get back to being Marianne Faithfull. Would you say you have found yourself again?
Long ago... but I am doing so many different things, it can be quite difficult at times. I am doing lots of shows, acting, concerts, movies - sometimes I do feel as if I don’t know who I am any more, but it’s all going beautifully!
6’Have you thought about making a film of your life?
It doesn’t really depend on me, it needs somebody who would want to make it. But yes I have thought about it, and I think it will probably happen, one day.
7’There are so many stories about your younger days - was your life really as mad as it was made out to be?
(Another laugh) Probably madder. Definitely, much madder.
8’Does music help deal with past problems? Yes... really I got over the past years ago, it took maybe ten years. It’s the definition of inner strength really, isn’t it? Getting over past problems, that’s what strength is all about.
9’Is that what Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Patti Smith have... all those old rockers who never die?
They say that old rockers never die but it depends on what they want to do - if they still want to rock, they do. Most of them seem to want to go on! Mind you.... I doubt if we’ll see another Stones tour.
10’You inherited a noble title, but you never use it. Is there a reason for that?
I’ve never seen the point. Being Marianne Faithfull is enough, I don’t need more than that.
